KIDDIE LIST 8-30-11

Travers Saturday saw the debut of well-bred babies who will hopefully show up in Stakes races later in the month. As we draw closer to the Breeders’ Cup, the Juvenile races begin in earnest. Six graded stakes races for two year olds are scheduled to be contested next week. The pedigree profiles of the entrants and race selections for each race will be posted on the main Iron Maidens Thoroughbreds website.

Hurricane Irene caused a minor disruption to the racing and training schedules in the Northeast. Let’s take a look at Saturday’s results and the upcoming maiden and allowance races scheduled for tomorrow. We’ll catch up with the works this week.

Race replays of many of the two year olds mentioned on the Kiddie List can be found at the Iron Maidens You Tube Video Channel. You can keep track of the two year olds through free virtual stable email notification systems at:

Interesting Facts About the Alabama Stakes

The Grade 1 Alabama Stakes is the third leg of the Triple Tiara, the closest race series to a filly version of the Triple Crown. Young three year old fillies will be asked run 1 ¼ miles over the dirt in a true test of classic stamina. This year’s field contains only six hopeful contestants, but they are pretty evenly matched. Between the six, all of the running styles are represented: pace setters, pressers, mid-pack runners and stalkers.

So which running style is most effective in the Alabama Stakes (G-1)? Pace pressers have been victorious seven times, while five each of mid-pack runners and stalkers have won. Only two pace setters have won since 1990. Six fillies made their move to be in front by the mile pole, while nine came charging down the lane to grab the lead in the final yards or to get their nose down at the wire.

Since the Breeders’ Cup Distaff inception 1984, no Alabama heroine has won both races in the same year. Seven have placed second in the Distaff, one (Open Mind) was third, and the rest have finished out of the money. Nine fillies didn’t contest the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in the same year that they won the Alabama. Since 1990, ten contestants won their post-Alabama start while eight placed second.
