HOT BABIES AT DEL MAR

fiery-horse

The offspring of first crop sires Majestic Warrior, Street Boss and Street Hero are in the spotlight this weekend at Del Mar. Dry Summer, Forest Boy and Buckleberry Gray were mentioned on previous Kiddie Lists. On Sunday, watch for a daughter of Smart Strike.

CAMEO APPEARANCE (Majestic Warrior - Sweet Beat, by Tiznow) (C) will no doubt want to go longer, but this Baffert trainee has to start somewhere. By Hopeful Stakes (G-1) winner and first crop sire Majestic Warrior, Cameo Appearance is a half brother to the stakes placed Fire Alarm (by Fusaichi Pegasus). Their dam is a full sister to the Grade 3 winner Kitty in a Tizzy. There’s some class in this female family. The third dam Potridee is an Argentinian Champion and a G-1 winner in the US. He’s a homebred for the Gary & Mary West Stable.

URGENT MATTER (Street Hero - Capotes Cielo, by Capote) by first crop sire Street Hero, this colt is bred to be precocious. His half sister by Silent Name was 3rd in her debut at Del Mar, then won there a couple weeks later. Street Hero has 2 winners from 7 starters. His son Gabriel Charles won a nose decision over the Del Mar poly last Saturday.

BUCKLEBERRY GREY (Unbridled's Song - Elusive Diva, by Elusive Quality) (C) $125K BARMAR 2012. His half-brother by Bernardini won at first asking, but didn’t live up to his pedigree, as he’s currently competing in claiming races at Canterbury. Their dam retired with a 14-6-3-4 ($484,510) record. As a three year old she won the Railbird (G-3) and placed in the Hollywood Oaks (G-2) and La Brea (G-1). At four, she evolved into a G-3 turf stakes sprinter.

DRY SUMMER (Any Given Saturday - Greenstreet, by Street Cry) (C) $120K OBSAPR 2012. This ridgling is the first foal out of his stakes winning dam. Greenstreet won a listed stakes at 1 1/6 miles over the dirt. She’s a half-sister to the stakes winning veteran Seattlespectacular. Coaching Club American Oaks heroine Funny Moon and the multiple graded stakes winner Vanlandingham are part of this distaff family. Dry Summer should be proficient up to middle distances but better over dirt or turf rather than Polytrack.

FOREST BOY (Forestry - Belvedere Miss, by Pleasant Colony) (C) $270K OBSMAR 2012. Forest Boy breezed a furlong in :10.00 at the OBS Select two year old in training sale. One of his two half sisters have started and she’s 0 for 4. Their dam won her second start and was an allowance class dirt miler. Belvedere Miss is a half sister to Hollywood Starlet (G-1) heroine Diplomat Lady, who is by Forestry. Another half sister Dream Play is a G-3 winner. The second dam Playcaller won three listed stakes and forest boy’s third and fourth dams are also stakes winners. Forest Boy has 3 x 2 inbreeding to Kentucky Derby hero Pleasant Colony, indicating that he may prefer running longer distances than the typical progeny of Forestry.

TITLE CONTENDER (Pulpit – Winter Garden, by Roy) (C) $310K KEENOV 2010. This son of Pulpit is out of a multiple G-3 sprinter. None of his half siblings have lived up to their breeding so far. The Baffert trainee’s third dam is Canadian Champion Two Year Old Filly Phoenix Factor.

POWER BROKER (Pulpit - Shop Again, by Wild Again) (C) $360K EESEP2011. His dam needed 13 starts to win her maiden, but placed third in her first three starts. She eventually won a listed stakes. Shop again is a half-sister to Personal Ensign (G1) heroine and G-2 winner Trappe Shot, plus two other stakes horses.

On Sunday, watch for SCARLET STRIKE (Smart Strike – Scarlet Tango, by French Deputy) in race 3 at Del Mar. She’s a half sister to King’s Bishop (G-1) hero Visionaire.

Schuylerville Stakes BBQ

by Laurie Ross & Steve Thygerson

SchuylervilleStakes07Summer is here and along with it comes the opening of Saratoga Racetrack for another season. Adding to the heat is the barbecue which will be held during the Schuylerville Stakes (G3) . No, not the kind where steaks sizzle over an open fire. This type of barbecue entails seven juvenile fillies all gunning for the lead. Who can endure a broiling pace, who will be baked and which one of them can cool her heels and come from off of the pace?

The filly with the highest Brisnet speed figure is #4 CAN'T EXPLAIN (Not For Love - I Ain't P T, by A.P. Indy), with a 103. She debuted at Belmont back in May and was caught late by Full Living. Can't Explain returned on June 20th and ran them off their feet. She had no problem running the rail and was never touched, widening all the way through the race. Can’t Explain’s full sister Together Indy won the seven furlong Commonwealth Stakes (G-3). Their dam is a half-sister to Black Eyed Susan heroine Acting Happy and the second dam I Ain’t Bluffing is a two-time Grade 1 winner. She’s the most experienced filly in the field with a grand total of two races under her girth. She enters for the powerful Pletcher barn.

There are three daughters of first crop sires entered.

#2 BABY J (J Be K - Lavender Baby, by Rubiano) seems to be the buzz horse coming into this race with a field high 84 Beyer in her debut back in June. She was faltering late but held for the win. Now she gets another sixteenth and will have to repeat her last to get the kewpie doll. Don’t like the slower works post-race but she is capable. Not sure she gets the lead against these which could be problematic, but like Dominguez, Rosario is very good with two year olds. She had the best debut but will need to back it up in a better field. Baby J is bred to be a precocious sprinter. She’s a half sister to a stakes winner and stakes placed runner.

Brown_Eyes_Blue#3 BROWN EYES BLUE (Big Brown - Golden Lips, by Silver Ghost) beat the gate and was gone at this distance at Churchill on June 30th. She is by Big Brown and his foals have hit the ground running winning 50% (3/6) of their races. Her dam is a half sister to the long-winded turf routers Hotstufandthensome,Tacit Agreement and Silver Charades. Brown Eyes Blue is the only one in the field who has run 6F and a substantial progression in her second race could be enough to seal the deal.

#7 SO MANY WAYS (Sightseeing - Happy Scene, by Dehere) she put them away for fun in her debut, drawing off to an eight length win in a 4 ½ furlong race at Parx. Add the last two bullet works and you have a filly who showed exceptional speed first out and looks to progress on her stellar start. Two year olds that have the outside post have a tendency to break out, but this one appears to be able to use her speed whenever she wants and the faster fillies are all on the inside. Although her speed figure is below some I wouldn’t discount one that ran away and hid first out. She’s the first winner for her first crop sire. There’s little blacktype in the first two generations of her female family, although her second dam Really Happy did win a Grade 3 and is multiple graded stakes placed.

#1 SWEET SHIRLEY MAE (Broken Vow - Joyful Chaos, by Rahy) started her career with a nice win at Belmont and has been working well at Saratoga in prep for her stakes debut. She has the rail, which is always an adventure with two year olds but she also has the services of the patient Ramon Dominguez to keep her on the straight and narrow. Wes Ward is a master with freshman and has been working her on Poly so you can expect that she has legged up and will be ready for this test. Her dam was a runner in her own right, earning $233K in her 16 races including a stakes over the lawn. She’s a half to the multiple turf stakes winner Sal the Barber.

#5 FULLY LIVING (Unbridled's Song - Half A. P., by Pulpit) got the best of Can’t Explain by half a length when the two dueled in their first meeting. Fully Living’s dam is a half-sister to Champion Juvenile Halfbridled. Fully Living hasn’t been out since her maiden score, but she owns a sharp set of breezes throughout June.

#6 MR HALL'S OPUS ( Officer - Sala de Oro, by Expelled) comes in really light off of a race in the mud at Belmont, won with a pretty slow time (1:00/2) and Breen is taking his shot I guess. The problem is that you have no idea how that win in the muck fits here. A clue is her bullet work… in the mud. Is she a mudlark? Too soon to tell but it looks like it. Mr Hall's Opus is a half to the stakes winning sprinter Truth and Justice. She would have to pull a quantum progression and I don’t believe in the horse fairy.

SELECTIONS

Track bias: In the last six editions of the Schuylerville, speed hasn’t held. The winners were all pace pressers or mid-pack runners who made their move in the stretch.

The Schuylerville boils down to which filly can rate and which can’t? We’ll take a shot with the most experienced filly, CAN'T EXPLAIN. BROWN EYES BLUE has a race under her girth at this distance, so we know she’s fit. FULLY LIVING and SO MANY WAYS also have a shot.

#4 CAN'T EXPLAIN

#5 FULLY LIVING

#7 SO MANY WAYS

#3 BROWN EYES BLUE – longshot pick

Amarish vs. The Rest

Since 2000, five colts completed the Willard Proctor Memorial/Hollywood Juvenile Championship double. The most accomplished winner Squirtle Squirt evolved into a Breeders Cup Sprint hero and a Champion Sprinter.

This year’s Willard Proctor champ AMARISH faces six rivals in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship in his quest to join Squirtle Squirt on the exclusive list. So dominating was Amarish’s performance in the Willard Proctor, that only JUST CALL ME AL , who was 7 ¾ lengths distant in the Willard Proctor will take on Amarish again. The rest remainder of the field is comprised of last out maiden winners and one obligatory maiden.

DIRTY SWAGG (Street Hero - Diversa, by Tabasco Cat) was caught flat-footed at the start in his debut, but rallied to finish within 3 ½ lengths of the winner. Dirty Swagg will appreciate a bit more real estate. He’s a half brother to Vanity Handicap (G-1, 9F) Love Theway Youare. His first crop sire won the Norfolk stakes but was injured before he could show his stuff as a three year old. His offspring should do well through two turns and with age. Dirty Swagg turns around in just 13 days.

Mentioned last month on the Kiddie List, CARSON'S CROWN (Harlan's Holiday - Delicatessa, by Dare and Go) came up between horses to win his 5F debut by ½ lengths. His dam was stakes placed at two and became a multiple stakes winner in Canada. She’s a half sister to two stakes winners, including Sassy Pants, the dam of the Grade 1 heroines Dubai Escapade and Madcap Escapade. Sassy Pants is the grand dam of Darly Debutante winner Mi Sueno. Carson’s Crown has posted three rapid breezes.

Maiden claimers were no match for SCHERER MAGIC (Doneraile Court - She's a Nasty One, by Touch Gold) last month. Since his 7 ¼ length score, Scherer Magic has worked strongly. His full sister won her debut, but was unplaced in two subsequent juvenile stakes races. There’s some minor blacktype in the second distaff generation.

Third time was the charm for STRONG WIND (Tribal Rule - Chalk Face, by Memo) when he trounced state-bred maidens by over six lengths. He’s a full brother to juvenile stakes placed Tribal Face. His dam is a full sister to a stakes winner and G-2 placed runner.

Still a maiden, CONFEDERATE RECON (Salute the Sarge - Building Bridges, by Indian Charlie) has been bested by Carson’s Crown and Just Call Me Al. Bred to be a precocious sprinter, Confederate Recon’s first crop sire won the 2007 Hollywood Juvenile Championship. Confederate Recon carries no blacktype in his first two generations.

Selections:

Track bias: Front runners dominate sprint races at 44% this meet.

It’s Amarish’s race to lose. The undefeated colt has made no mistakes. Trainer John Sadler claimed Scherer Magic and the colt has been working strongly. The Sadler barn gets 29% wins off of the claim. Carson's Crown has a classy pedigree and he owns the best works of the field. Dirty Swagg also has a good pedigree and with a good break, he should be competitive.

#6 AMARISH

#5 SCHERER MAGIC

#3 CARSON’S CROWN

#1 DIRTY SWAGG – longshot pick

THE KIDDIE LIST

The summer season of racing is upon us. The conclusion of the Triple Crown means that this blog turns its attention to the two year olds of 2012 as we attempt to find the best and brightest of the crop. Last year, we pointed out Dullahan, El Padrino, Take Charge Indy, Union Rags, Creative Cause, Drill and countless other runners before they hit the national radar. Many juveniles that were highlighted on the Kiddie List rewarded their backers with double digit wins.

The Kiddie List will cover the best juvenile workers breezing four and five furlongs. We’ll post the top five workers and blue bloods from Aqueduct/Belmont/Saratoga, Arlington, Fair Hill, Monmouth, Keeneland/Churchill, Santa Anita/Hollywood Park and Del Mar. If a particularly well bred baby from the database shows up at another track, we’ll include that one as well. Due to the enormous number of juveniles, some of these names may show up only once or twice. It’s highly suggested that you use a virtual stable, available through Equibase, DRF or Brisnet to follow the babies in whom you’re most interested.
