THE KIDDIE LIST

The summer season of racing is upon us. The conclusion of the Triple Crown means that this blog turns its attention to the two year olds of 2012 as we attempt to find the best and brightest of the crop. Last year, we pointed out Dullahan, El Padrino, Take Charge Indy, Union Rags, Creative Cause, Drill and countless other runners before they hit the national radar. Many juveniles that were highlighted on the Kiddie List rewarded their backers with double digit wins.

The Kiddie List will cover the top five workers breezing four and five furlongs. We’ll post the top workers and blue bloods from Aqueduct/Belmont/Saratoga, Arlington, Fair Hill, Monmouth, Keeneland/Churchill, Santa Anita/Hollywood Park and Del Mar. If a particularly well bred baby from the database shows up at another track, we’ll include that one as well. Due to the enormous number of juveniles, some of these names may show up only once or twice. It’s highly suggested that you use a virtual stable, available through Equibase, DRF or Brisnet to follow the babies in whom you’re most interested.

WORKS:

ARLINGTON PARK

4F Main Track:

Bugle Call (Lemon Drop Kid - Clambake (IRE), by Grand Lodge) (F) 4F :48.40 (5/22) has a strong turf pedigree. Her half-sister by Giant’s Causeway dropped to the claiming ranks after only two starts. Bugle Call’s distaff family is filled with Group class turf winners. Her dam is a half-sister to three stakes horses and Bugle Call’s third dam Alidiva won broodmare of the year honors in Ireland and Italy. Bugle Call may do fine over Polytrack, but she should shine on the lawn, especially going long.

BELMONT

4F Main Track:

Wildcat's Element (Wildcat Heir - Blinding Element, by Quiet American) (F) 4F :48.37 (2/25). This filly has a speed over stamina pedigree. Her half siblings haven’t done much on the track so far. Wildcat's Element’s dam is a full sister to the stakes veteran Ole Faunty, winner of the John Campbell ‘cap at 1 1/8 miles.

Absolute Paradise (Any Given Saturday - Gentle Grace, by Woodman) (F) 4F :48.38 (3/25). Raced 5/11/12, BEL Race 3, finished 6th. She’s the first foal produced by her dam. Not much blacktype in the pedigree. If she doesn’t make it over the dirt, keep an eye on her if she heads to the lawn. With Woodman as her damsire and Deputy Minister as her second damsire, she just might enjoy the green.

Indy's Illusion (A.P. Indy - Miss Illusion, by Mr. Prospector) (C) 4F :48.96 (5/25). This colt may need a few starts and will likely prefer going two turns. He could show up at Saratoga later this summer. Despite the nice breeding, Indy’s Illusion’s half siblings needed multiple starts to win their maidens and have toiled in the claiming ranks. Indy's Illusion’s second dam is the multiple G-1 heroine Missy’s Mirage.

4F Training Track:

Unnamed (Tale of the Cat - Coquila Rose, by Wekiva Springs) (C) 4F :48.07 (2/21). Two of four half siblings have hit the board in their first two starts. His dam is a half-sister to a multiple stakes winner and another half-sister produced Dwyer Stakes (G-2) winner Mint Lane.

Fly Bye Cool Roy (Pomeroy - Fly Bye Dancer, by Fire Dancer) (C) 4F :48.12 (3/21). His pedigree indicates that he’ll be precocious, but although they were by sprint-type sires, none of Fly Bye Cool Roy’s half siblings were win early types. There’s no notable blacktype in the first two generations of his female family.

FAIR HILL

4F All-weather training track

Crazy About Me (Lawyer Ron - Ms. Blue Blood, by A.P. Indy) (C) (4F :49.20 1/8). Work matches 4 YO colt Dr. Skip. Crazy About Me is the first foal produced by his dam. She failed to hit the board in five starts, but Ms. Blue Blood is a half-sister to Kentucky Derby hero Monarchos.

Classy Broad (Tiznow - Forest Huntress, by Forestry) (F) (4F :49.80 4/8). She’s the first foal produced by her dam. Forest Huntress won her debut and placed in a listed stake during her 13 race career. The second dam Chasseresse is a stakes winner.

Three Hearts (Hat Trick (JPN) - Secret Heart (SAF), by Fort Wood) (F) (4F :49.80 4/8). Owned/bred by Team Valor, Three Hearts is a half-sister to BC Juvenile Turf hero Puck. Her dam is a half-sister to two South African multiple stakes winners and the second and third dams are also South African stakes winners. This filly has been working steadily for the last few months.

4F Dirt

Fifth Gear (Leroidesanimaux (BRZ) - Thunder Miss, by Hussonet) (C) 4F :49.00 (1/12) gate breeze. He’s the first foal produced by his dam. She failed to hit the board in two starts, but she’s a half-sister to Just Approval, a long-winded PAN-G1 winner.

Jolly Lolly (Forestry - Moments of Joy, by Lost Code) (F) 4F :49.00 (1/12) gate breeze. She’s a half-sister to Rite Moment, a multiple G-2 winning sprinter. Jolly Lolly has a win-early pedigree. Her half-sister won in her second try as did another half sibling.

Runway Flair (Hard Spun - Flash of Fashion, by Petionville) (F) 4F :49.00 (1/12) gate breeze. She’s a half-sister to Strut The Canary, a stakes winning sprinter. Their dam is a full sister to the multiple G-1 winner Island Fashion. Neither Strut The Canary nor Flash of Fashion were win-early types, although with Hard Spun as her sire, Runway Flair may be more precocious.

Patatuz (Pulpit - Sue's Last Dance, by Forty Niner) (F) 4F :49.00 (7/12) gate breeze. Patatuz’s pedigree is filled with historic Claiborne bloodlines. She’s a half-sister to the multiple G-1 handicap mare Island Sand (Acorn, Delaware ‘Cap, 2nd in Kentucky Derby, etc.). This distaff line includes Queen’s Plate Champ Nigon, Canadian Champion Sprinter Eternal Search. Patatuz may be best at middle distances and improve with racing.

Salsipuedes (Broken Vow - Biscayne Bay, by A.P. Indy) (F) 4F :49.00 (7/12) gate breeze. She’s another filly with strong Claiborne bloodlines. Her half-sister Open Water was third in the G-1 Las Virgenes Stakes (8F). Their dam was unplaced in one start. She’s a ¾ sister to the Champion Juvenile filly Surfside and Salsipuedes second dam is the Champion Flanders. Salsipuedes should improve with racing and adore running two turns.

Special Mention: Unnamed (Johannesburg - Oatsee, by Unbridled) (C) 3F :39.00 (5/7). This was the second breeze turned in by the half-brother to Preakness and Met Mile Champ Shackleford.

HOLLYWOOD PARK

Dry Summer (Any Given Saturday - Greenstreet, by Street Cry (IRE)) (R) 4F :48.00 (3/38). This ridgling is the first foal out of his stakes winning dam. Greenstreet won a listed stakes at 1 1/6 miles over the dirt. She’s a half-sister to the stakes winning veteran Seattlespectacular. Coaching Club American Oaks heroine Funny Moon and the multiple graded stakes winner Vanlandingham are part of this distaff family. Dry Summer should be proficient up to middle distances but better over dirt or turf rather than Polytrack.

KEENELAND

Cat's Claw (Dynaformer - Chili Cat, by Storm Cat) (F) 4F :47.60 (1/12) gate breeze. She has a royal pedigree filled with Phipps family breeding. Cat’s Claw’s dam, won in her second try and eventually became a stakes placed runner. Chili Cat is a half-sister to multiple G-1 heroine Pine Island and her half-brother Point of Entry (by Dynaformer) won the Elkhorn (G-2) going 1 ½ miles over the Keeneland turf. This female family includes the graded stakes winners Country Hideaway, her offspring Boca Grande and Vacation, plus BC Distaff heroine Pleasant Home.

Chamois (Smart Strike - Meridiana (GER), by Lomitas (GB)) (C) 4F :47.60 (1/12) gate breeze. The farther the better for this colt, over turf or possibly Polytrack. His half-brother Center Divider won the Bowling Green ‘Cap (G-2, 11F, T) and John’s Call Stakes (13F, T). There dam won the Italian Oaks and Orchid ‘Cap (G-2, 12F, T). Chamois’ distaff line is filled with stout German stakes quality bloodlines.

Copse (Indian Charlie - Greenery, by Galileo (IRE)) (C) 4F :48.40 (5/12). His dam placed in her debut and is stakes placed over the turf. Greenery is a half-sister to the Grade 2 turf router Grassy an English Group 2 winner and a French Group 3 winner. This is the family of the Claiborne stallion Stroll.

Maybe So (More Than Ready - Wish On, by Grand Slam) (C) 4F :48.40 (5/12). This colt should be pretty versatile over all surfaces and likely be best from sprints to middle distances. There’s little blacktype in his immediate female family, but the multiple Grade 1 California stakes veteran Both Ends Burning is a member of this distaff family.

SANTA ANITA

Purple Prose (Street Hero - Ancient Purple, by Video Ranger) (F) 4F :47.20 (1/23). This is the third consecutive bullet posted by the daughter of first crop sire Street Hero. She’s a homebred trained by Myung Kwon Cho (the same guy who brought us Street Hero, Premier Pegasus, Riveting Reason, etc.). Although Purple Prose’s half siblings weren’t win-early types, her dam hit the board in her debut and placed in a listed stakes. There’s little blacktype in this female family and most of the runners have few wins.

Unnamed (Old Topper - Devons Success, by Devon Lane) (C) :47.80 (4/23). His dam won or placed in 8 of 11 starts. Old Toppers love synthetics, so if this guy winds up with a name and runs at Del Mar, he’s worth a second look.
