The most precocious of this year’s crop of two year olds made their arrival on the racing scene at Keeneland’s spring meet. As summer deepens, more tracks will be carding races for the babies. As I’ve done over the last three years, I’ll continue the Kiddie List as I seek out the best and brightest of this next generation. Dullahan, El Padrino, Take Charge Indy, Union Rags, Creative Cause, Drill, Dreaming of Julia, Beholder, Kauai Katie, Dry Summer, Renee's Titan, Power Broker, Honorable Dillon, Redwood Kitten, Emollient, Fortify and countless other runners were featured on the Kiddie List before they hit the national radar. Many juveniles that were highlighted on the Kiddie List rewarded their backers with double digit wins.

The Kiddie List will cover the best workers and blue bloods breezing four furlongs and farther. I’ll cover the New York, Kentucky, California and Florida tracks, and occasionally Arlington, Fair Hill and Monmouth. If a particularly well bred baby from the database shows up at another track, I’ll include that one as well. Due to the enormous number of juveniles, some of these names may show up only once or twice. It’s highly suggested that you use a virtual stable, available through Equibase, DRF or Brisnet to follow the babies in whom you’re most interested.

Due to the large number of breezing two year olds, I’ll cover New York separately. Look for works from other states in the next couple of days.

June 7, 2014| Four furlongs:

Just too Perfect (Pleasantly Perfect - Winter Tide, by Tale of the Cat) (F) :50.38 (27/34) $50K OBSMAR14. Three of four half siblings won/placed as 2 YO, so keep an eye on this one.

Isabella Sings (Eskendereya - Isobel Baillie (GB), by Lomitas (GB)) (F) :51.27 (6/7). She’s a half to Juvie turf SW ALAURA MICHELE (by Arch). First crop sire Eskendereya was a juvie turf winner and also won the FOY and Wood Memorial. His babies should be moderately precocious and be proficient over all surfaces.

Mariano Intheninth (Summer Bird - Affluenza, by Giant's Causeway) (C) :50.49 (14/34) 470K KEENOV12. One of two half sibs is a juvie winner. This distaff line is pure Claiborne breeding. The dam is a half to SW juvie HAIT and SP Play With Fire; a half sister bore two SW juveniles. This distaff line produced the top sires PULPIT and JOHANNNISBURG. Deceased freshman sire Summer Bird won the Belmont Stakes. I expect Mariano Intheninth will relish two turns and could be proficient over dirt or turf.

Five Furlongs, Dirt Training Track:

Angela Renee (Bernardini - Pilfer, by Deputy Minister) (F) 1:01.24 (2/4). She’s a full sister to MG1W sire TO HONOR AND SERVE and a half to SP Elnaawi (by Street Sense). Two of four half siblings to race are winners, both won/placed as juvies.

June 9, 2014 | Four Furlongs, Dirt Training Track:

Bebop Raindrop ( Scat Daddy - Weatheringthestorm, by Kyle's Our Man) (F) :49.96 (4/27). $140K FTNAUG13. Her dam is a half to Canadian Turf Champ CLOUDY’S KNIGHT and to SW STORMY IMPACT. That’s it for blacktype in two generations of the female family. Bebop Raindrop could enjoy the Turf and/or Poly.

Drafting (Street Cry (IRE) - Indy Five Hundred, by A.P. Indy) (C) :51.02 (17/27). This Darley homebred is a half to Eng. Gr. 3 juvie placed runner Ecliptic (by Kingmambo). Their dam is a G-1 winning ¾ sister to Italian Gr. 1 juvie winner BIONDETTI and to MGSW DELTA PRINCESS the dam of Champion ROYAL DELTA. Drafting’s 3 half sibs and their dam won/placed as juvies.

Epsilon (Desert Party - Munnaya, by Nijinsky II) (C) :51.23 (19/27) Likely stablemate to Drafing, Epsilon is a half to MGSW ALPA (by Bernardini), French SW MYSTIC MELODY (by Seattle Slew) and to SP Yaya (by Rahy) and Lavender Sky (by Mt. Livermore). The dam and second dam are SW.

Kool Charli (Tale of the Cat - Desafinado, by Pulpit) (F) :49.96 (4/27). One of three half sibs to race has won. The dam is a half to the MSW veteran DEELIGHTFUL IRVING and to G3 SW IRVING’S BABY. Tale of the Cat’s babies win 16% first time out and he’s a pretty good sire of win-early types. Kool Charli has been working steadily in the 4F :49 range.

Marking (Bernardini - Seventh Street, by Street Cry (IRE)) (C) :50.12 (8/27). Stablemate to Drafting, Maring is the first of his dam’s foals to make it to the races. Seventh Street won the Apple Blossom, Go For Wand, and placed in the Ruffian and Ogden Phipps H., all G-1 events. She’s a half to Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE Gr. 1) hero REYNALDOTHEWIZARD and to MSP American Story.

Moreno Street (Street Sense - Danceinthesunlight, by A.P. Indy) (C) :50.90 (13/27). He’s a half to Dwyer (G-2) winner MORENO (by Ghostzapper). Their dam is an unraced daughter of Canadian Champion Three Year Old Filly DANCETHRUTHEDAWN, and her dam is the Champion and blue hen DANCE SMARTLY, winner of the BC Distaff and half sister to top sire SMART STRIKE. Moreno Street will likely not be precocious and prefer running two turns.

Wealth Creation (Super Saver - Lunargal, by Yes It's True) (F) :49.98 (7/27) $250K OBSMAR13. Two of her four half siblings were juvie winners. This is a precocious distaff family. Their dam is a juvie stakes winning full sister to juvie SW LUNARLADY; a half sister to ASTROLOGY, who won a G-3 at two and placed in the Preakness; and to LUNARPAL who won also a G-3 at age two.

June 11, 2014 | Four Furlongs, Dirt Training Track:

Divine Praises (Medaglia d'Oro - Grand Prayer, by Grand Slam) (F) :49.00 (1/19). She’s a full sister to G-3 SP Valid and a half sister to Ruffian Stakes (G-1) heroine MALIBU PRAYER (by Malibu Moon). Two of Divine Praises’s siblings have won. She has RF* inbreeding to the blue hen Prayer Bell, who is her fourth dam and Prayer Bell is the dam of Silent Screen, the second damsire of Medaglia d'Oro. Divine Praises full sister won one of two starts as a juvie and their dam placed in both starts at two.

Militsa (Yes It's True - Mind Eraser, by Unbridled's Song) (F) :49.00 (1/19). It is quite likely that Militsa and Divine Praises are stablemates trained by Bill Mott. It’s rare to see Mott babies post bullet works, so pay attention to these two. Militsa’s dam is a half to the stakes winning miler KATY NOW (by Tiznow). The second and third dams own blacktype. Militsa’s dam placed in her debut and sire Yes It's True is noted for getting precocious offspring.

Yippee (Harlan's Holiday - Hip Hip, by Monarchos) (F) :50.55 (10/19). She’s a first foal for her Claiborne-bred dam, Hip Hip is a half sister to the stallions GSW CONGRATS and SP Flatter. This is also the distaff line of sire’s EASTERN ECHO and ROAR, and MGSW YELL. Yipee’s fourth dam is blue hen Glowing Tribute, dam of Kentucky Derby winner SEA HERO, grand-dam of Champion European sprinter MOZART, etc.

SW – Stakes Winner

MSW – Multiple Stakes Winner

GSW – Graded Stakes Winner (G1SW, G2SW, G3SW – Grade, 1, 2, 3 stakes winner)

SP – Stakes Placed

MSP – Multiple Stakes Placed

GSP – Graded Stakes Placed

Blacktype – A stakes race. A horse’s name is designated in bold print when they have won or placed in any stakes race. Names in bold capital letters designate a stakes winner, including Graded or Group races. Bold small lettered names specify that the horse has placed in a stakes race including Graded or Group races. Names with no bold print designate horses that have not won or placed in a stakes race and thus, they have no Blacktype.

Blue Hen – A superior mare who has a widespread influence on the breed through her sons and daughters. Examples: La Troienne, Almahmoud, Somethingroyal. See Rasmussen Factor regarding inbreeding to these mares.

Broodmare Sire – a/k/a Damsire. The sire of the dam.

Classics – In the US, for colts, Kentucky Derby-G1, Preakness Stakes [G1], Belmont Stakes [G1]; for fillies, Coaching Club of America Oaks [G1]. The classic distance in the US is one and one-quarter miles, (10 furlongs), the length of the Derby. In England, for colts, 2,000 Guineas [G1], Epsom Derby [G1], St. Leger Stakes [G1]; for fillies, 1,000 Guineas [G1], Epsom Oaks [G1]. The classic distance in England is one and one-half miles (12 furlongs), the length of their Derby.

Dam – female parent of the horse (mother).

Damsire – a/k/a Broodmare sire. The sire (father) of the dam.

Distaff Family – a/k/a Female Family - The maternal line, starting with the dam, tracing back to the second dam, third dam, etc.

Full Brothers or Sisters – Full brothers and sisters are by the same sire and out of the same dam.

Half Brothers or Sisters - Half-brothers or sisters have the same dam but a different sire.

Inbreeding - Mating of closely related individuals, for instance, Danehill is inbred to Natalma through her son, Northern Dancer, the grandsire of Danehill, and through Spring Adieu, the second dam of Danehill. Thus, Danehill is inbred through two half siblings to one dam.

Rasmussen Factor – The "Rasmussen Factor" (or RF) is a term used to describe inbreeding to superior females (see Blue Hen) through different individuals in the first five generations. Leon Rasmussen and Rommy Faversham developed the breeding theory. The inbreeding must occur through the sire and the dam (on both sides of the pedigree) and the duplication of the inbred female must be within five generations. Examples of the RF Factor: Elusive Quality – RF to Somethingroyal through her sons Secretariat and Sir Gaylord. Unbridled – RF to Aspidistra through her son, Dr. Fager and daughter, Magic; Article by Leon Rasmussen regarding the Rasmussen Factor.

Sire – male parent of the horse (father). A thoroughbred horse becomes a sire after one of his offspring is registered in the Jockey Club Registry.
