The Kiddie List searches for the best and brightest of this next generation of two year olds. Dullahan, El Padrino, Take Charge Indy, Union Rags, Creative Cause, Drill, Dreaming of Julia, Beholder, Kauai Katie, Emollient, Fortify and countless other runners were featured on the Kiddie List before they hit the national radar. Many juveniles that were highlighted on the Kiddie List rewarded their backers with double digit wins.
The Kiddie List will cover the best workers and blue bloods breezing four furlongs and farther. I’ll cover the New York, Kentucky, California and Florida tracks, and occasionally Arlington, Fair Hill and Monmouth. If a particularly well bred baby from the database shows up at another track, I’ll include that one as well. Due to the enormous number of juveniles, some of these names may show up only once or twice. It’s highly suggested that you use a virtual stable, available through Equibase, DRF or Brisnet to follow the babies in whom you’re most interested.

Blacktype – A stakes race. A horse’s name is designated in bold print when they have won or placed in any stakes race. Names in bold capital letters designate a stakes winner, including Graded or Group races. Bold small lettered names specify that the horse has placed in a stakes race including Graded or Group races. Names with no bold print designate horses that have not won or placed in a stakes race and thus, they have no Blacktype.
Blue Hen – A superior mare who has a widespread influence on the breed through her sons and daughters. Examples: La Troienne, Almahmoud, Somethingroyal. See Rasmussen Factor regarding inbreeding to these mares.
Broodmare Sire – a/k/a Damsire. The sire of the dam.
Classics – In the US, for colts, Kentucky Derby-G1, Preakness Stakes [G1], Belmont Stakes [G1]; for fillies, Coaching Club of America Oaks [G1]. The classic distance in the US is one and one-quarter miles, (10 furlongs), the length of the Derby. In England, for colts, 2,000 Guineas [G1], Epsom Derby [G1], St. Leger Stakes [G1]; for fillies, 1,000 Guineas [G1], Epsom Oaks [G1]. The classic distance in England is one and one-half miles (12 furlongs), the length of their Derby.
Dam – female parent of the horse (mother).
Damsire – a/k/a Broodmare sire. The sire (father) of the dam.
Distaff Family – a/k/a Female Family - The maternal line, starting with the dam, tracing back to the second dam, third dam, etc.
Full Brothers or Sisters – Full brothers and sisters are by the same sire and out of the same dam.
Half Brothers or Sisters - Half-brothers or sisters have the same dam but a different sire.
Inbreeding - Mating of closely related individuals, for instance, Danehill is inbred to Natalma through her son, Northern Dancer, the grandsire of Danehill, and through Spring Adieu, the second dam of Danehill. Thus, Danehill is inbred through two half siblings to one dam.
Rasmussen Factor (RF)
– The "Rasmussen Factor" (or RF) is a term used to describe inbreeding to superior females (see Blue Hen) through different individuals in the first five generations. Leon Rasmussen and Rommy Faversham developed the breeding theory. The inbreeding must occur through the sire and the dam (on both sides of the pedigree) and the duplication of the inbred female must be within five generations. Examples of the RF Factor: Elusive Quality – RF to Somethingroyal through her sons Secretariat and Sir Gaylord. Unbridled – RF to Aspidistra through her son, Dr. Fager and daughter, Magic; Article by Leon Rasmussen regarding the Rasmussen Factor.
Sire – male parent of the horse (father). A thoroughbred horse becomes a sire after one of his offspring is registered in the Jockey Club Registry.
